How INSPIRED Pet Nutrition upgraded fire detection and access control to protect people, premises and production operations.

The Customer  

INSPIRED Pet Nutrition (IPN) is an innovative, award-winning pet food manufacturer with a family of well-known brands including Harringtons, Wagg, Barking Heads & Meowing Heads, AATU, Blink, Butcher’s, Classic, Pro-Nutrition and Ultra Premium Direct. IPN’s kitchens in Thirsk produce dry, wet and baked pet foods that dogs and cats around the world enjoy. Alongside its own brands, IPN also manufactures for a range of trusted partner brands, making operational continuity and site safety critical to day-today production and distribution. 

The Challenge  

As part of a wider centralisation of services programme, IPN extended its storage and distribution centre in Thirsk, requiring them to review their security and fire systems. The project required installing new access control and fire detection systems in the extension, which needed to integrate seamlessly with the existing services in the administration buildings. The challenge of this project was to ensure the solution supported site-wide consistency while ensuring the new facilities met all relevant fire safety and access management requirements. 

The Solution  

For this project, we installed a fully compliant Advanced fire detection system throughout the new extension in line with the requirements of BS 5839-1:2025. The system comprised:  

  • Automatic smoke and heat detectors  
  • High-level aspirating smoke detection  
  • Manual call points  
  • Sounders  
  • Visual alarm devices.  

We ensured that the new installation was networked with the existing control equipment to ensure continuity across the wider site.  

Our expert team of engineers also installed an electronic, card-based access control system to manage authorised access to specific areas of the site.  

This newly installed access control system was designed with centralised management in mind, so all staff and cardholders can now be managed consistently across both the existing buildings and the new storage and distribution centre.

 The result? We delivered a fully compliant, integrated fire and access control solution that supports the safety and operational requirements of the extended site.  

The new systems ensure the ongoing protection of the building, its occupants, and valuable stock, while maintaining the continuity of services across the wider facility. Now, IPN have a safer, more resilient environment that supports their production and distribution operations as the business continues to grow.
