Ponds Forge International Sports Centre

The Challenge

Ponds Forge International Sports Centre is a world class venue in the north of England, and regularly hosts international swimming events and other leading sporting competitions. The facility is also open to the general public all year round.  For health and safety and site-wide communications, a public address / voice evacuation system linked to fire systems is essential. To meet current standards and regulations, it was established that a major upgrade would be required, and this would mean a significant investment in new technology.

The Solution

Reflex and the client’s technical representatives evaluated a number of options.  Following a detailed acoustic and condition survey, chose a suitable system replacement at a cost of approximately £100,000 which involved the replacement of the complete front-end, whilst retaining the existing speaker network and cable infrastructure. For operators, this would also include a graphical user interface (GUI ) to greatly simplify the operation and control of the equipment.  The system now complies with health and safety legislation for zonal evacuation, zonal functionality and other relevant standards.  Other enhancements were achieved including the upgrade of all music sources to digital, and far greater flexibility for users.

Many public sector organisations choose to use Reflex to deliver solutions. These range from stand alone security applications utilising video surveillance, access control, intruder & perimeter detection and distributed audio, to integrated systems adopting the latest technologies – to add value and provide a significant contribution to site and building management. The types of challenge facing regeneration project managers and local authority planning officers are ubiquitous across the UK and partnership is the

key to success as with any business relationship. Two such major regeneration projects involved contracts at Manchester Markets – New Smithfield and Harpurhey. Both are major wholesale markets and operate almost 24 hrs, 7 days a week. Manchester City Council were keen to elect for a single end to end source of supply to support the regeneration projects. Site wide video surveillance systems were required to enhance the effectiveness of security, site operations, logistics and health and safety provision. This would involve the replacement of existing equipment and infrastructure and would ultimately need to integrate with other technologies and be capable of being operated and interrogated from an established Greater Manchester remote monitoring facility.
